June 28, 2018
The US authorities have disclosed that their agents were undercover in the dark net during the last year. Mass operation has revealed actual identities of more than 50 sellers at websites like Silk Road, Alpha Bay, Hansa, Dream, etc. Over 35 persons are already arrested, goods of over 23.6 million dollar cost seized.
To fight darknet several law enforcement bodies were involved including DOJ, ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Secret Service, the Postal Inspection Service and DEA. Actually, secret investigation was headed by HIS’s special agents who tried to launder money by changing fiat for cryptocurrency.
“The Secret Service is proud to work with our law enforcement partners to help combat one of the largest threats to the U.S. financial infrastructure, money laundering with virtual currency,” U.S. Secret Service Assistant Director Jenkins said.
Along with the arrests, authorities seized goods of over $23.6 million. These include liquid synthetic opioids, tramadol, fentanyl, Xanax, Oxycodone, MDMA, cocaine, LSD, marijuana, and psychedelic mushrooms. Moving on, they seized over 100 weapon units including guns, assault rifles, and a grenade launcher, five vehicles; over $3.6 million in gold bars and fiat; nearly 2,000 bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies of approximately $20 million worth; Bitcoin mining devices, computer equipment, etc.
“The Darknet is ever-changing and increasingly more intricate, making locating and targeting those selling illicit items on this platform more complicated. But in this case, HSI special agents were able to walk amongst those in the cyber underworld to find those vendors who sell highly addictive drugs for a profit. The veil has been lifted. HSI has infiltrated the Darknet, and together with its law enforcement partners nationwide, it has proven, once again, that every criminal is within arm’s reach of the law,” said HSI Acting Executive Associate Director Benner.
